Kim's Olympic Campaign Begins!

Hold the presses! Queen Yu Na has just announced her music!

The fact that Team Yu Na finally decided to release the reigning Olympic champion's music programs signals the countdown to the Olympic trail to Sochi. It's nearly September which means we only have another month an a half until the commencement of the Grand Prix Series, in which Kim is slated to compete twice (or rather, just give her the medals and book her in for the final already!) She will be competing in Paris at the Trophee Eric Bompard and at Skate Canada, both competitions being the usual slots Kim skates in.

Earlier today, the team finally announced the music choices for this season and not surprisingly, Kim and longtime choreographer David Wilson has opted for two figure skating warhorses. For her short programme, Kim will be skating to Stephen Sondheim's melancholic 'Send in the Clowns' and for her free programme, she will be looking to tango to Astor Piazzolla's signature 'Adios Nonino'.

A lovely forum member on GoldenSkate translated the key points of the article for us, and it's more or less the same for the video announcement. It says:

On Yu-Na's new SP, 'Send In the Clowns'
Yu-Na:When I listened to this piece before, I wanted to use this piece for my program. When I was choosing a music for this season, I remembered this piece, and I really wanted to use it so I chose this as my (SP) music.
Wilson:When I first listened to this piece about 5~6 years ago, I thought about Yu-Na skating to this piece. I didn't recommend this piece for Yu-Na at that time, but when she said she liked this piece this time, I thought now(this season) was a time(to use this peice). This piece suits Yu-Na's powerful&lyrical style very well.

On Yu-Na's new LP, 'Adios Nonino'
Yu-Na:It's(this piece) is a powerful tango music which is completely different from my SP. It's a very famous piece, and it's also one of my favorite pieces. I think this tango would be a lot different from before. I think it's a most difficult program that I've ever skated to, but I really like this program. As it's also my last program as a competitive skater, I'm very happy that I'm skating to pieces that I've really wanted to use before. I will try hard to skate well at competitions.
Wilson:'Adios Noninio' is a dynamic&very powerful piece. I had this music cut(of 'Adios Nonino) ever since I started my job as a choreographer. There's a lot of feelings to this piece, but not only that-it changes from fascinating mood to a cheerful mood, powerful&dramatic to 'missing'(as in missing someone)-it has sudden changes so no person can easily perform to this piece. The only skater who can perform to this piece is Yu-Na Kim

***

Just to juggle your memories, Kim set her first WR score to a tango back in 2007, during her senior debut skating to 'El Tango de Roxanne'. That mixture of spice and attack is what makes her aesthetic exciting and fun, and so skating to Piazzolla should be easy for her. Its sharp and feisty but with a recognizable melancholic crescendo that will surely facilitate Kim's final season program. If there was ever a skater who can deliver the message of Adios, and there have been countless who have tried, it will be Queen Yu Na who will own this piece. Likewise with Clowns, the short program channels Kim's lyrical roots, a style she hasn't really used since her Lark Ascending program in 2007. The two contrasting programs should be the perfect vehicle for Kim to leave her mark on the ice.

It's interesting to note that both Mao Asada and Kim Yu Na seem to be on the same wavelength with their approach this season. Both skaters started and will be ending their competitive careers together and they both chose to look back and decided to present this season as a culmination of their respective careers. It's a very poignant time in ladies figure skating, but until we reach Sochi, I shall not dwell on this fact and instead I shall look forward to what both of these ladies have in store for us.

Are you excited?
