Despite serving a strong skate overall, Mao-chan's landing on her opening triple axel was flawed. This puts her behind Miki Ando, who is currently in the lead with 66.58 points, while our Mao-chan is sitting not far behind at 63.41. Overall, the performance was OK. I think that if she skates well at tomorrow's free skate, she can oust Ando for the gold. However, Miki is proving to be a strong contender this season, so we don't know what's going to happen for sure. We have to give credit where credit is due, and today Miki proved that after waiting in the wings for many seasons, she's ready to take the lead. Her performance was beautiful and flawless, so she deserved her victory. Nevertheless, Mao's goal is Tokyo and to defend her World Title, so I'm sure that come March, Mao will take on the ice and slay.
Here's her short programme. LOVE the new costume, but I'm not sure about her skating with her boots on show. I've gotten use to her skating with them covered...hmmm, I don't know. It makes her legs look shorter. Put the leggings back on girl!
In terms of progress, I am noticing that her speed is improving. Plus with her step sequence towards the end, her timing has also improved, hitting those accents really well. Her jumps are not as smooth as they were at Nationals, but like Scott Hamilton (who I actually do not like) says, whatever happens in the Short...just get it done. And she did. Well done Mao-chan!!
