83rd Academy Awards: Best Dressed

I have to apologize deeply for not keeping Tome updated. Gomen! Gomen! It's just that I have been knee-deep in work recently with deadlines coming up, and a huge chunk of work slapping me on the face left and right this semester. In fact I was fortunate enough to have kept an eye on Mao-chan at the 4CCs! It so crazy!!! Why would you dump all the work in Semester 2 instead of sharing it out between both terms? Whoever is responsible for the mess of a sophomore year that I am having should be sentenced to....do my work for me.

Anyhow, I am aware that it has been two days since the Academy Awards, but I did watch bits of it plus the red carpet on Sunday during a collection of mini-breaks. I can't just not post about the fashion now can I? No siree! So here it is, my picks for the Best and Worst Dressed of the evening. I'll keep it to the ladies this time because let's be honest here, you see an actor in a tux you've seen them all. Am I right? I must say that there are less fashion offenders at the Oscars than there was at the Golden Globes..but I think that's partially because these are the cream of the crop. No TV 'actors', or musicians (except for Celine Dion and Mandy Moore), or guidettes from Jersey Shore to ruin the overall aesthetics. But that's not saying there weren't any blunders. Oh there were blunders alright. But most of the ladies this year were just meh. Ah well, on to the show, here are my top picks for the cream of the crop.

Natalie Portman, Rodarte
Big evening for Natalie alright, and not just because she looks like
she's about to burst! That jewel tone compliments that pregnancy glow perfectly.
On a side not, it is yet to be confirmed whether she's staying in Dior because of Galliano's
recent antics. Seeing as he just got fired, maybe she won't part with Dior just yet?

Mila Kunis, Ellie Saab
What a showstopper eh? She may have played evil bird in Black Swan, but on Sunday
she was anything but. Fresh of the runway and onto the red carpet. Never mind if she got snubbed
by the Academy, she stole the show at the carpet anyway. Eat your heart out!

Gwyneth Paltrow, Calvin Klein
Gwyn was lookin nice and shiny on Sunday, as well as streamlined and minimal.
I thought this was better than her second dress at the after-party. She looks polished and sleek.

Hilary Swank, Gucci Premier
Looking swanky Hil! Love the feathers and the glitz. Great colour as well, sets off
the brunetteness quite well. Good call on keeping the hair and maquillage on the downlow
as well. The dress on its own is good enough as it is.

Dame Helen Mirren, Vivienne Westwood
All hail the ultimate Brit combo! The dame looked fantastic with her gunmetal gray
dress, with a matching silver pixie-cut. She never does fail to impress does she? You can't
see it, but she's also wearing some of her favourite stripper heels. Sexy GMILF!

Cate Blanchett, Givenchy Haute Couture
I still don't know whether I like the dress on her. I loved the
manga inspired collection, and Cate looked great, but I'm not sure if the
dress was right for the event? Nevertheless, she looked fab, and the dress was fierce.

Hailee Steinfield, Marchesa
This young lady sure is building up an impressive fashion cred. She co-designed
this dress, and I think it's a perfect combination of youthfulness and propriety. Great
colour choice as well. It reminds me of Blair's prom dress but more creamy and angelic.

Halle Berry, Marchesa
Great improvement from that pyjama-nightie-pandemonium
of a dress at the Golden Globes. Somebody actually told Halle that she
looked like a cheap hooker last time. Thank you.

Sandra Bullock, Vera Wang
Rounding off the list is the newly single Ms. Bullock, in this voluptuous cabernet dress
by Vera Wang, which again is a better showing than at the Globes with that Jenny Packham
dress. Instead of looking dishevelled, Sandra looked gorgeous and polished, though a tad aged?
Nevertheless, a good Scarlet Lady dress will always be a showstopper.

Apart from Natalie's dress, I thought there was a general lack of bright colours on Sunday. There were some nice palettes of red, but even they were all a bit lacklustre. Overall I think it was all down to safe choices, but teamed with effortless chic and polish. I think these ladies above brought it that night. The best dressed for me was Anne Hathaway, but since she did have 8 costume changes, I thought it would be better to devote an entire post to her.

What do you think? Do you agree with my choices?

xoxo
