Last night's Golden Globes officially started the 2012 awards season, and true to form, the red carpet was full of Hollywood's finest. Actors and actresses from both television and the big screen walked down the carpet in some of the most beautiful couture pieces and as always, some were better than others. The ladies definitely brought their A-Game so without further ado, here are my top favourites for Best Dressed. I hope you like them!
SOFIA VERGARA: Wearing a beautiful navy fishtail gown, custom made by one of her favourites, Vera Wang. I love the ruching and the gathering of the fabric and the dress fit Sofia like a glove! Look at that stunning hourglass figure! Sofia won together with the cast for Best Comedy TV Series, and in the fashion stakes she may as well have won a statuette. |
ZOOEY DESCHANEL: The New Girl wore a custom Prada couture dress, and while most of the critics debate over it, I thought it was the perfect choice for the singer/actress. It's sleek and shiny, and the acidic green beading adds just enough tartness to bring life and youth to what could have been a boring and predictable choice. She went for a sultry 60s Barbarella-look and it is a beautiful colour on this quirky and whimsical nominee. |
TILDA SWINTON: Once again, Tilda brought a frosty fierceness onto the red carpet with this icy blue Haider Ackermann chiffon dress and structured tuxedo jacket. It's edgy and polished, a complete standout last night in a sea of nudes and champagne hued dresses. Plus, LOVIN that hairdo that is not dissimilar to mine :P |
ANGELINA JOLIE: Wearing Atelier Versace, Angelina finally broke out of her usual choice of black dresses. This cream satin gown, like the actress herself, is clean and simple- very understated glam and that flash of scarlet just complemented her alabaster skin. It's subtle colour blocking and it worked. |
NICOLE KIDMAN: It has been an underwhelming couple of seasons for the Nicole and I am so glad that she finally got her mojo back last night in this gray beaded chiffon Versace gown. It's still within her conservative frosty palette but when partnered with the cascade of her luscious red locks, it was a beautiful balance of fire and ice. The dress hugged her body perfectly, showing off those newfound curves (thanks to motherhood), and what else can I say really? Top marks! |
REESE WITHERSPOON: The lady in red did not disappoint. She looked breathtakingly divalicious in this Zac Posen mermaid dress. Luscious blonde waves, a sunkissed glow and the subtle shimmer of her diamond cuff complemented this commanding red dress. |
HELEN MIRREN: Never the one to disappoint on the red carpet, my favourite Dame wowed in a navy Badgley Mischka dress. It was a beautiful and sophisticated dress, appropriate for her age yet still wonderfully edgy and fashion forward. I loved the detail of her skirt with those appliqués (?) that looked like a gathering of feathers. |
DIANA AGRON: Another lady in red walked the carpet last night. Diana wore a couture dress from Giles Deacon's Spring 2012 collection, and it was a welcome surprise. She broke out of her usual dainty showing and instead opted for this beautiful laser-cut swan dress that was vibrant and young. Goodbye Quinn Fabray, hello Hollywood starlet! |
EVAN RACHEL WOOD: Unfortunately for Kate Winslet, her Mildred Pierce co-star stole the spotlight last night with this mesmerising Gucci Premiere dress. The halter neck dress fit this diva like a glove and the peacock motif, feathers and pailettes together was just very glamorous. The look was a definite throwback to the Golden Era and it is one that befits Wood to a T. |
OCTAVIA SPENCER: We all know that 'Minnie, don't burn chicken', but what we didn't know was that this lovely actress was saving her best dresses for the big awards nights! Octavia won big last night, both for her performance in The Help as the Best Supporting Actress and also for his immaculate lilac Tadashi Shoji gown. She looked regal and poised and the draping gather well and hugged the right curves. Bravo! |
LEA MICHELE: Rounding off the Best Dressed list is Glee superstar Lea Michele in this daring and sultry Marchesa gown. She shimmered and shimmied down the red carpet in this sheer number, embellished with silver beading and embroidery. It was a very grown up look and yet another score for the actress in the style stakes. I quite like the fact that she's finally living and breathing and looking like the diva that she is. She's got the voice, the bod and hopefully the role of Eponine in the upcoming remake of Les Miserables. Here's looking at you kid! |
So the order of the evening were nude-toned fishtail gowns but as you can see none of them made my list (I'm putting Angelina down for colour-blocking, and the dress is more champagne than nude ^^). Not that I have anything against it but it's just become so common and predictable that the ones I found interesting were almost the complete opposite of that. These ladies proved that one can still WOW on the red carpet, so if this is any indication of how the season is going to go, I'm keeping my eyes on these precious winners.
What did you think? Do you agree?
